7 rare rhinos photographed in western Indonesia — A conservationist says seven of the world's rarest rhinoceroses were photographed at a national park in Indonesia. It is the first sighting there in 26 years.

Tarmizi, from the Leuser International Foundation, said Thursday that pictures from movement-triggered cameras identified a male and six female Sumatran rhinos in Aceh province's Leuser National Park as of April.

More than 1,000 images from 28 camera traps were taken since last July. The park's rhino population is estimated to be no more than 27.

There are an estimated 200 Sumatran rhinos living in the wild in small groups in Indonesia and Malaysia, half the number from 15 years ago.

An estimated 70 percent of the population has been lost since 1985, mainly to poaching and loss of habitat. ( Associated Press )

Burglars busted after getaway car gets stuck in mud - A pair of alleged robbers bungled a burglary in Florida after their car got stuck in the mud.

Matthew Swaggerty, 21, and Timothy Marrison, 20, are accused of stealing camera gear, phones and laptops from homes and cars in a Debary, Fla., neighborhood, say local police from Volusia County.

Deputies used a victim's stolen iPhone "phone finder" app to track the suspects. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the pair in their getaway car, a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro, which was stuck in the mud on the side of the road.

The suspects had just stolen a shovel from a nearby home to dig their vehicle out, Volusia County sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. The stolen electronics—worth about $30,000—were found inside the car.

Swaggerty and Marrison confessed to the crime and are being held without bond at Volusia County Jail.

In photos taken at the scene, police are seen laughing as a dejected Marrison sits on the ground next to the Camaro.

"I'm laughing now," Eileen Simoneau, one of the burglary victims, told the Orlando Sentinel. "But the sense of violation, knowing that they were in our home, is terrifying." ( The Sideshow  )

Apple 'to unveil mini iPad in October'

http://www.mnn.com/sites/default/files/iPadMini_m_0827.jpg

Apple to unveil mini iPad in October - Apple will unveil a new, smaller version of its wildly popular iPad in October after the release of the latest version of its iPhone next month, the All Things Digital website reported Sunday.
"First comes the latest iteration of the tech giant's hugely popular smartphone, which will be unveiled at an as yet unannounced event on September 12," the website said.

"Only after the next-generation iPhone is out the door and on sale will Apple announce the smaller iPad it's been working on," it said.

"That device, which is expected to have a display of less than eight inches (20 centimeters), will be uncrated at a second special event, which sources say is currently scheduled for October."

The 10-inch iPad has long dominated the tablet market, but faces a growing challenge from smaller models like Amazon's Kindle Fire, the Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy.
Apple is expected to launch the miniature iPad later this year, with analysts saying it could allow the California-based company to again best its global rivals despite the death last year of visionary founder Steve Jobs. ( AFP )

French president marks WWII Jewish deportations  — President Francois Hollande has led ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the largest round up of Jews in World War II France.

On July 16 and 17, 1942, 13,000 Jews were deported by French police, many of whom were first holed up in Paris' Vel d'Hiv, or the Winter Velodrome stadium.

Former French President Jacques Chirac was the last French leader to lead a ceremony there in 1995 and, for the first time, acknowledge the state's role in Jewish persecution.

Holland told the gathering Sunday that the crime "was committed in France by France."

Holland said that "Not one German soldier, not one was mobilized during this entire operation."- (AP)
